Aussie skier stands tall in downhill event

AUSTRALIAN Greta Small fought off the flu to claim a top-20 finish in the women's downhill ski event at JeongSeon Alpine Centre.

The 22-year-old Victorian, competing in her second Winter Games, recorded a time of 1:42.07 to claim 20th place on Wednesday.

"I'm really happy with that result,” Small said.

"I woke up with the flu this morning and only really had 75 per cent energy so I just went out there and did my best today.”

American skiing icon Lindsey Vonn snagged a bronze medal with her 1:39.69 run after a chaotic start to the day saw athletes fall like flies as they struggled with the PyeongChang slopes.

Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel slotted in silver and Italian gun Sofia Goggia took home the gold.

Small will return to the slopes on Thursday to compete in the combined event.

In the ladies figure skating event, Australian Kailani Craine has qualified for the free skate component after completing a stunning short program on Wenesday.

Craine will vie for a medal on Friday after scoring 56.77 for a routine in which she pulled off a triple loop to double toe loop and an impressive layback spin.

The 19-year-old was fifth two-thirds of the way through the 30-woman field, with the top 24 progressing.

"I actually wasn't that nervous going out. I was nervous before walking out in the warm-up,” Craine said.

"I was focused but because I was so well trained coming into it I could just switch off my brain and enjoy it at the same time.”
