Australian soldier killed in Afghanistan was not in combat

AN Australian Special Forces soldier has died in Afghanistan in a "non-combat incident" in as yet unclear circumstances overnight.

Defence Force Chief Air Marshal Mark Binskin spoke briefly to reporters in Canberra this morning about the incident, but details were scant.

Air Chief Marshal Binskin confirmed the man was found in an administrative building in the Australian Afghanistan headquarters at the Afghanistan International Airport overnight.

He said the family had asked that no details about the soldier's personal or professional life with the military be released at this stage.

Air Chief Marshal Binskin confirmed that the Australian Defence Force Investigative Service began an investigation, but would not go into detail about it.

He also "declined the opportunity" to comment on other Defence-related involvement in the Abbott Government's Operation Sovereign Borders.
