Bait and tackle shop owner doesn’t mind ruffling feathers
KALKA Bait and Tackle owner Dean Ruff doesn't mind ruffling feathers if it's a subject he believes in.
Mr Ruff sent this letter to the editor recently outlining his thoughts on the competitive landscape his business operates within.
"Sometimes big business should just suck it up.
"My wife and I run our own business here in Rockhampton and we are getting sick of the complaining from some of our opposition.
"Isn't it funny how some larger competitors can have sales and specials on the products we both sell and they can have the sale nationwide, and yet, when a small business decides to sell the product cheaper, they start complaining to suppliers.
"We have had several complaints placed against us over the years to a number of companies from our opposition, complaining about the prices we sell our product for.
"We choose what to sell our products for according to our customer base and the price they want to pay. If some of these large retailers, with their multi-store buying power, can't match us for pricing on everyday terms, that's their problem.
"They buy the product at a better price than we do because they are in a buying group or part of a nationwide company, so why go off complaining to our suppliers when we decide to do exactly what you have been doing to us.
"And ask yourselves this: where would consumers be without competition in retail?"
