Artist set to blow away rivals

HERVEY Bay balloon artist Stacey Taplin hopes to blow away her competitors at the World Balloon Convention.

The internationally accredited artist boarded a plane for Dallas, Texas, yesterday to join about 25 other Australian competitors.

So how did someone get to compete internationally as a balloon artist?

"You get to the point where you get asked if you want to go," Ms Taplin said.

She scored an invitation almost a year ago after spending the past four years honing her balloon-building skills at Hervey Bay party store A Stylish Celebration.

Some of her creations included a swan and carriage, bride and groom, and Christmas trees.

For the convention, Ms Taplin and the Aussie team would build a giant balloon sculpture of Australia, complete with the Sydney Harbour Bridge, red and yellow sunsets, sailing boats and Uluru.

When she isn't creating Australia, Ms Taplin would be able to view other international entrants build balloon dresses, bags and other unusual creations at the one-day Festival of Balloons and circus-themed costume party.
