Barack Obama wants gun reform as police hunt shooters

UNITED States President Barack Obama has repeated his calls for gun reforms, saying they could make mass shootings "rare as opposed to normal".

SPECIAL COVERAGE:

Meanwhile police are still hunting multiple gunmen following a mass shooting at a Californian disability centre, which has left at least 12 people dead.

Mr Obama told CBS News there needed to be "common sense gun safety laws", including legislation that would stop those on the country's No Fly List from being able to legally buy firearms.

"We don't yet know what the motives of the shooters are but what we do know is that there are steps we can take to make Americans safer," MR Obama said

"We should never think that this is just something that just happens in the ordinary course of events because it doesn't happen with the same frequency in other countries."

SWAT teams, bomb squads and police are searching for three suspected gunmen involved in the San Bernardino shooting.

The three men are reported to be carrying AK-47-type weapons, wearing black ski masks.

Witnesses say the shooters fled the scene of the bloodshed in a black four-wheel-drive.
