DEPUTY Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce proved to be a quick-thinking hero who isn't afraid to get his feet wet when a woman fell into a fountain at Parliament House.

Mr Joyce and fellow MP Tim Wilson wasted no time in helping the woman, who slipped and fell into the Pool of Reflection as Parliament House's Member's Hall played host to commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum on Indigenous Australians.

The woman, using a walking aide, appeared to slip, falling into the lower level of the fountain.

Footage captured by Channel Nine shows Mr Joyce, coming from mere metres away and quickly getting his foot wet as he enters the fountain to gently help fish her out.

He then carefully retrieves her walking stick, and comforts her as a chair is found to seat her on, the helps get her upright to sit on it.

The head of the National Party's final act is to calmly remove his beloved RM Williams left boot, empty it of water, and slip it back onto his foot. before continuing to casually chat with the woman.
