Dane Beams almost ready for Lions return

AFL: Star Lions midfielder Dayne Beams could play his first game of 2016 against the Swans next weekend.

The joint best-and-fairest winner missed the final five weeks of last season with a shoulder reconstruction, and has been sidelined since picking up a knee problem after Christmas.

He has been able to complete back-to-back training sessions in recent days, and was expected to take part in his first main session with teammates this morning.

"We just have to see whether his knee can withstand the workload," football manager Matt Francis told afl.com.au.

"You'd think (playing) the week after his first main session is the best outcome ... as long as the knee doesn't go backwards."

Brisbane captain Tom Rockliff only needs to get through today's training to reclaim his spot against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night after missing two weeks with a calf complaint.

Ruckman Stefan Martin is also on track to play against the Dogs after being concussed in last weekend's win over the Gold Coast.

Suns vice-captain Steven May was given a five-match suspension for the hit, and with fellow tall defender Rory Thompson out with an ankle injury, the Gold Coast's defence will face a challenge against North Melbourne's tall timber - Drew Petrie, Ben Brown and Jarrad Waite - on Saturday evening.

The Suns have the option of using Clay Cameron, Keegan Brooksby or Henry Schade in place of May, while Sam Day has also played at the defensive end.
