AMERICAN beatboxer Biz Markie is excited to perform in Australia with the Yo Gabba Gabba! live shows, which start in Sydney on Saturday.

It will be the rapper’s first trip to Australia. APN caught up with Markie over the phone just before his flight to Australia.

He said the live shows, like the television series, are just as entertaining for parents as their children.

“It’s still like a grown up show. We’re just entertaining people,” he said.

“You just got to see it to believe it. It’s going to rock your mind when you see it.”

Best known for his 1989 hit Just a Friend, Markie features regularly on the popular children’s show in his segment Biz’s Beat of the Day.

“The makers of the show wanted me to dance but my back was hurtin,” he said.

“I thought of Biz’s Beat of the Day right on the spot, and it got an overwhelming response.

“I think kids like it because it’s different, it’s bright and it’s like an exercise.”

The colourful children’s series, which airs on Nick Jr, is hosted by orange-clad DJ Lance Rock and his friends Brobee, Foofa, Muno, Plex and Toodee.

Yo Gabba Gabba! also appeals to adults through performances by popular bands such as Data Rock, The Killers and The Shins as well as appearances by celebrities including Jack Black, Elijah Wood and Anthony Bourdain.

Both Time and Rolling Stone magazines have praised it as one of the most exciting shows on American television.

The Daytime Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning show’s music and dance focus means it easily translates into a live format.

On its current Australian tour, the producers have invited local bands Art Vs Science, Operator Please and Little Red to perform in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne respectively as the show’s Aussie ‘Super Music Friends’.

Despite three seasons on Yo Gabba Gabba!, which has been commissioned for a fourth series, Markie still cannot believe he is touring around the world with a children’s show.

“I never thought I would do that,” he said.

“I knew I’d be touring rap wise, but I never thought I’d be touring with a kids show.”

Yo Gabba Gabba, with Biz Markie and Super Music Friends, perform six shows at the Sydney Opera house today and tomorrow. They play two shows at the Brisbane Convention Centre on Tuesday and three shows in Melbourne on June 11.
