‘Throw the book at him’: Barba set to be handed NRL life ban

Ben Barba is set to be officially banned from the NRL for life, with an Integrity Unit investigation into alleged domestic violence committed by the ex-North Queensland recruit to wrap up as early as Tuesday.

According to Channel 9, the game's Integrity Unit has been investigating the Barba assault allegations over the past 24 hours with a report to be handed over to NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg.

Greenberg has already drawn a line in the sand on violence against women, saying on Saturday he will have no problem deregistering any player found guilty of domestic violence.

Barba was sacked by North Queensland on Friday after club officials viewed CCTV footage of an alleged incident at a Townsville casino over the Australia Day weekend.

He is alleged to have assaulted his partner and mother of his four children, Ainslie Currie, and is being investigated by Queensland police.

"We have run out of patience and tolerance for misbehaviour off the field," Greenberg, who was yet to see the CCTV footage, said following Barba's sacking.

"Violence against women is at the very top of that list. If you're violent against a woman you can expect to be removed from the game. It starts now.

"I haven't seen the footage as yet, but if it shows violence towards a woman then really there's no debate. Ben Barba will be out of the NRL immediately and I can't see him ever returning."

Barba's career will almost certainly be over with the Rugby Football League, the governing body of Super League, confirming they will enforce any punishment handed down by the NRL.

Meanwhile, rugby league legend Mark Geyer has slammed Barba's alleged behaviour on Triple M's Rush Hour with MG.

"If proven guilty, the book should be thrown at him," Geyer said.

"He's had countless opportunities to atone. It doesn't seem that he wants to.

"If found guilty, he's guilty of one of the worst crimes a man can commit and that's touching a woman.

" … The bigger picture here is that Ben Barba has four daughters - what kind of message is he sending to them?

"He should be barred, if guilty, from all codes, all countries."
