THE children might worry about their golfing handicaps but for Bernie Antcliff it is all about getting out on the course and enjoying it.

The trouble is, she has found out that she is not too bad a player.

“My husband (Louie) always played,” she said.

“I just couldn’t see the point of chasing a little white ball all the way around a course.”

Now she can see the point and enjoys doing it at least once a week.

She is not alone, as the surname Antcliff is seen regularly on the local golf courses, with her children also top golfers.

Under the old system, Antcliff was sitting on a 17 handicap but currently, under the new one, she is on a 22.

She is happy with that as the game is more about the fun she gains from the sport than collecting championship wins.

Not that she doesn’t have a few victories.

Her biggest triumph was the B-grade closed championship win at Yeppoon in 2007.

Winning a tournament on the home course is always special and Antcliff admits she loves playing at the Yeppoon Golf Club.

She has a special liking for the 14th hole.

“It is a short par-four,” she said.

“This is the hole where I plan to drive on to the green.”

While admitting her drive is her favourite shot, Antcliff said that is why she has a liking for this particular hole.

She said she has yet to be successful but on one occasion she did see her ball pull up about 50 metres short and that enabled her to get a birdie.
