Heartbreaking search for son's 'best mate' after fatal crash

A GRIEVING family has launched a desperate search for their son's 'best mate' after the man in his 30s was killed in a highway accident in the North Burnett.

Simon Hannan was driving south in his Jackaroo on Wuruma Dam Rd in the North Burnett on Monday when his car was t-boned and he was killed.

Tragically, Simon's travelling companion, and beloved dog Merlin hasn't been seen since.

Mr Hannan's stepfather David McDougall has asked the public for help to find him.

"My stepson Simon was tragically killed yesterday... He had his best mate (Merlin) in the car with him," Mr McDougall said.

"It has been hard to get details, but Merlin has run from the crash seen at some point and has not been seen since."

Monto police sergeant Mick Bazzo confirmed responders did see Merlin at the scene.

"There were some sightings on the day," Sgt Bazzo said.

"It was extremely timid and whenever it was approached it ran into the bush."

Eidsvold fire captain Trevor Keiler confirmed members of his crew saw Merlin.

Sgt Bazzo said Merlin's disappearance "adds to the tragedy" of the incident.

"People treat their dogs like kids," Sgt Bazzo said.

"They're not going to get their partner, brother or son back, but to get (Merlin) back would be some sort of comfort.

"Pets have a funny hold on people."

Sgt Bazzo urged anyone who has seen Merlin to contact either Eidsvold or Monto police or North Burnett Regional Council.

It was about 11.15am Monday when Mr Hannan turned right onto the Burnett Highway, towards Eidsvold.

A Ford Ranger, which was travelling north on the highway towards Monto, 't-boned' Mr Hannan's vehicle.

He was taken to Eidsvold Hospital around 12.30pm where he died.

The Ranger's male driver, also in his 30s, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Emergency services were in attendance from around 11.40am onwards.

Eidsvold police acting sergeant Geoff Price said Mr Hannan was still conscious when responders arrived.

He said Mr Hannan suffered multiple fractures in his legs and internal trauma but there were "not a lot of visible injuries".

Sgt Price said there were unconfirmed reports that other vehicles may have seen the incident or driven past and hadn't stopped.

Initial reports to emergency services suggested a truck was involved in the accident, but it was not present at the scene when responders arrived.

Sgt Price appealed to anyone who may have further information or dash cam footage to contact police.

Forensic Crash Unit officers are investigating the incident.
