Big Day Out on way to Woodford?

WOODFORD Folk Festival has held discussions with organisers about the potential of bringing the Queensland leg of Australia's biggest one-day music event to this region.

Big Day Out organisers are searching for a new venue following the State Government's decision to redevelop Parklands on the Gold Coast as an athlete's village for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Woodford festival director Bill Hauritz confirmed yesterday that discussions had been held about the potential of the 365 acre Woodfordia site to host the one-day event.

However he said the January 20 date was not good coming so quickly after the annual Woodford Folk Festival.

Deputy Premier and Infrastructure Minister Jeff Seeney wrote to the Parklands Trust in June advising it not to book any events at the venue beyond September this year.

Big Day Out chief Adam Zammit confirmed this week that he was looking for an alternative venue either in Queensland or northern NSW.

The Gold Coast event attracted 38,000 people last year but has a best attendance of 45,000.

Mr Hauritz said if the Big Day Out was to come to Woodford, his team would need to begin building the necessary infrastructure immediately after the Woodford Folk Festival, which has just played host to 113,000 patrons. He said if the event was to come here it would be at the end of the Big Day Out's Australian run rather than the beginning.
