Man stomps on ex-girlfriend's face breaking her jaw

THE last thing Reuben Petty's ex-girlfriend saw was a foot coming down upon her face.

She woke up almost half an hour later and felt "stabbing" pains around her mouth. After a closer look, she also saw blood pouring out of her mouth.

The Biloela man's ex-girlfriend picked herself up and drove to her sister's house, some distance away in the town, where an ambulance met her and transported the badly injured woman to Rockhampton Hospital.

Rockhampton Judge Brad Farr told the District Court last week Petty showed no remorse after he stomped on his ex-girlfriend's face and then left the scene.

Petty, 27, last week pleaded guilty in Rockhampton District Court to two counts of common assault, one count of threatening violence and one count of grievous bodily harm.

The court heard on one occassion Petty threw a beer bottle at his ex-girlfriend and punched her face, knocking her unconscious.

In a seperate incident, Petty held a knife to his ex-girlfriend and threatened to use it on her.

In relation to the grievous bodily harm attack, the court heard on April 21 last year, Petty drank a large amount of liquor.

He then picked her up, threw her against the wall and then stomped on her face.

She ended up with a broken jaw in two places and needed surgery.

She was flown to Brisbane Hospital later that day for major dental work, which included permanent mouth fixtures.

His defence lawyer Jeff Clarke said his client's ex-girlfriend, on a number of occassions, would talk about how men were flirting with her.

"The relationship was destructive ... both of them drank alcohol in excess," Mr Clarke said.

Mr Clarke told the court Petty's ex-girlfriend provoked the attack where he stomped on her face once.

Judge Farr said Petty showed callous disregard towards his ex-girlfriend.

He was sentenced Petty to two years in prison.

Petty will be eligible for parole on November 14 2013.
