Cluck, cluck! Chicken babysitter to the rescue!

CHICKENS are flying the coop and pecking around for a holiday fit for a feathered guest.

A Sunshine Coast business is providing a "chicken minding" service for people who are going away.

Pet resorts have long looked after cats and dogs, and now City Chicks at North Arm is doing the same for chickens.

Owner Kirstie Henning said her 2ha property would provide a perfect haven for chooks during the September school holidays and over Christmas.

Chickens can roam free during the day and will be kept secure during the evening.

"It's really like a pet resort for cats and dogs where we can look after chickens for people while they are away and give peace of mind to owners who want to get away for the holidays," Ms Henning said.

"We can send texts or photos to owners and update them on how their chickens are going.

"If a chicken has a special diet we can cater for that too, otherwise all food is provided.

"You would be surprised how many spoilt chickens are out there on the Coast."

Ms Henning bought the City Chicks franchise in July last year after accidentally becoming a chicken owner when the feathered friends came with the property.

"Chickens are great pets and they have their own little personalities," Ms Henning said.

"They will sit with you on the patio at your feet and give back to you with eggs.

"More and more families are discovering how good they can be as pets and as a way to teach kids where eggs come from.

"To their relief, we are providing somewhere where they can keep their chooks while they are away."
