Bishop backers launch website

TOOWOOMBA'S Catholic leaders have launched a website to provide what they say is an accurate account of the events leading to the controversial sacking of Bishop William Morris.

Bishop Morris, head of the Catholic diocese of Toowoomba, was stood down by Pope Benedict in April this year.

The website www.bishopbillstory.com.au was created by the Toowoomba Diocesan Leadership Group.

It publishes information and correspondence relating to Bishop Morris's sacking.

The website also provides an avenue for people to call on Australian bishops to launch an inquiry into the matter.

John Elich was previously chair of the Diocesan Pastoral Council and is a member of the leadership group.

Mr Elich said the website aimed to provide an accurate account of the sacking.

“When a bishop gets dismissed, a lot of Catholics and the general community think there must be more (to the dismissal) than they're saying,” he said.

“We've set up this website and I think anyone who visits it won't be able to draw any conclusion other than the lack of natural justice.”

Mr Elich said the website was not an attempt to have Bishop Morris reinstated.

“We realise there is no chance of Bill being reinstated and that's not his desire either.”

Despite that, Mr Elich said there was a need for change to prevent another bishop suffering a similar fate.

“We can't make a change from the outside; we can only make change and influence from within.”
