Block shocker: heartbreak as Glasshouse auctions fizzle

SIMON and SHANNON Vos have plenty to celebrate after their Block Glasshouse win tonight.

The brothers topped the auction results with a $335,000 profit after their Prahran apartment sold for $1.9 million on the reality renovation show.

The additional $100,000 grand prize brings their total winnings to $435,000.

But the brothers from Coffs Harbour were brought to tears when bidding stalled and three of their fellow teams walked away with just a fraction of what they earned.

"It's bittersweet," Shannon told APN.

"I do feel we deserve it because we put a lot of work in, but at the same time it's hard to take too because you want your mates to be happy."

Chris and Jenna Susetio were the first cab off the rank, and they earned a respectable $310,000 above their reserve thanks to two competitive bidders.

The Vos brothers enjoyed a short and fast auction, which quickly went above their reserve.

But the momentum slowed with Maxine Stokes and Karstan Smith's auction.

The Newcastle newlyweds, who had the largest apartment, earned $40,000 profit and things only got worse from there.

Darren and Deanne Jolly, who had the smallest apartment out of the five, earned just $10,000 above their reserve.

It was the same result for Gold Coast parents Michael and Carlene Duffy, whose apartment initially failed to even meet its reserve.

Host Scott Cam called it the most "bizarre" of any of the Block auctions he has witnessed.

"While we hope that all contestants walk away with a financial reward for the time and effort they commit to The Block, it is the buying public that determines the outcome of this program," said Michael Healy, Director of Television for the Nine Network.

"I'd like to thank the contestants for their remarkable achievements in producing these incredible apartments, as well as the very talented crew who produced this series, which has been a massive ratings success."

Expectations were high after the four teams from this year's Fans vs Faves series took home a total of $2.4m in profits in April.

The five Glasshouse teams took home a total of $805,000 in profits.

The two-hour grand final started on a more positive note though, with the wedding of Smith and Stokes.

Gold Logie winner Cam officiated the nuptials with the help of a celebrant.

"It was a nice end to the series," Shannon said.

"We got to put nice clothes on and relax a little bit. It was nice to let our hair down and end it on a high."

A 10th season of The Block is currently filming in South Yarra and will air early next year.
