The Block's living and dining rooms deliver highs and lows

THIS year's season of The Block may have started as a close competition, but a gap is widening after tonight's room reveals.

The five teams of renovators delivered a mixed bag of living and dining rooms. Some impressed, while others left the judges scratching their heads.

Josh and Elyse used their bonus point, which resulted in a tie for first place with Ronnie and Georgia (the two teams split the $10,000 prize).

The two couples of clashed regularly on the show, leading to some awkward tension when Ronnie then had to chase up Josh and Elyse for the money they still owed him from the 48-hour challenge.

To make matters worse, Josh and Elyse opted out of enjoying their overnight stay, part of the weekly room reveal prize, to avoid a sleepover with Georgia and Ronnie - who had hoped it would be a chance to patch things over.

At least Ronnie and Georgia can take comfort in the fact that without that bonus point, they were tonight's clear winners.

Once again Georgia was praised for her on-point styling in their neutral living and dining rooms.

"It really is pitch perfect," Neale Whitaker said.

"The level of sophistication in here is incredible. I can't believe this is the same team that put that awful mirror in their room last week.

"It's been done with such skill - skill I've rarely seen on The Block."

Shaynna Blaze was particularly impressed with the original artwork Georgia sourced for the dining area.

"It's one of the nicest pieces of artwork I've ever seen on The Block," she said.

Josh and Elyse earned nearly equally glowing praise for their 'kinfolk' aesthetic and room-spanning concrete shelf.

"This (the shelf) is outstanding; the generosity of it - wow," Neale said.

"It's very, very contemporary, it's got soul."

The only critique was the size of the dining table and the fact that it isn't extendable.

"You will want to have a dining party from time to time and that table isn't going to let you do that," Darren Palmer said.

Jason and Sarah finished second, again, after betting big on their fireplace.

While the judges were impressed with the working fireplace, but the lack of seating and the placement of the light over the dining table let them down.

"That fireplace is stunning in the fact that it's to the side even though it's in the middle. It's really clever. I want it in my home," Shaynna said.

"My problem is in a house of five bedrooms we have the couch where everyone has to rigidly sit there and watch TV."

Clint and Hannah once again copped criticism for changing the architect's original plans. Their concrete rendered nib wall backfired with the judges, who felt it made both the living and dining areas feel smaller.

"I feel strangely disconnected in here. I feel like I want to be part of the living room," Neale said.

"In here (the living room) I'm even more convinced that wall doesn't work. A lot of potential buyers will walk in here and go where is the other living room? Is this it?"

At least Hannah was praised for her styling.

"They've used a level of sophistication that I think is correct for the potential buyer," Neale said.

It was Sticks and Wombat who received the harshest feedback for their mish mash of styles, with the judges going as far as telling the best mates to scrap their living and dining rooms completely.

Sticks and Wombat may need to redo their living and dining rooms entirely.

"They need to take these couches back and redesign their furniture layout," Shaynna said.

"I want to shake them and say stop. They are going to be in trouble if they don't sit down and think about who they are."
