Boat race all in the timing

WATER craft of all shapes and sizes will battle it out for a huge prize pool — and who can have the most family fun — in the second annual Gladstone Marine 100 tomorrow, starting in Auckland Creek.

The 30 nautical mile trip is not about first to the gun, but who can come closest to their predicted time in what could be tricky conditions.

Old salts and novices alike will pit themselves against the clock while raising money for the Rotary Club of Gladstone community service.

“Last year, it was a good day and we asked people what they wanted this year,” said organiser and Gladstone Marine Centre sales manager Mick Tedford.

“We’ve added novelty events, heaps more prizes and just made it a real family fun day on and off the water.

The ‘race’ is from Auckland Creek to Sea Hill and return via the Narrows.

Racing starts tomorrow morning with most vessels expected to leave between 9am and 10am, with the first back expected around 2-2.30pm.

There will be a post-event barbecue and presentation at the yacht club.
