Boats fire brings reception to an early close

EVERY wedding is memorable, but one couple who held their reception at the Keppel Bay Marina on Saturday night won't be forgetting their big day in a hurry.

The couple were probably expecting beautiful views of the harbour, but instead guests had front seat views to fierce fires that destroyed two boats and damaged three others.

The fire forced guests to evacuate the reception about 9.30pm.

Local band The Short Fall were the entertainment at the wedding, and band member Ryan Conway managed to capture a series of photos and a video.

His brother, Angelo, said when the smell of burning plastic drifted over to them he thought their equipment was on fire and started checking their lights and speakers.

It wasn't until flames started to engulf the boats they realised what was happening.

"It escalated so quickly," he said

"The bride jumped on the microphone and started telling everyone to get away from it. The bride was pretty upset, you've got to feel for her."

Angelo said no one was in any danger, but they did see the whole boat go up in flames.

"It was pretty crazy," he said.
