Bob Katter wants to give tax cuts to joy-giving footy stars

FOOTBALL stars would be given tax breaks worth thousands of dollars on their rich salaries, under a plan maverick federal MP Bob Katter will take to this year's federal election.

The controversial MP - whose Katter's Australian Party plans to contest most Victorian electorates and is tipped to win a Victorian Senate seat - says AFL and rugby league heroes deserve a "fairer tax rate" because of the joy they give the public.

Mr Katter says the players deserve special tax deals to compensate them because their earnings plunge when they retire, often aged in their 20s.

The radical idea has some support from tax experts but is a political minefield as it would involve tax cuts for highly paid footballers at a time when the Federal Budget is in deficit.

Mr Katter's footy tax deal could become a reality after the election if he holds the balance of power.
