Bull riding Ben has a big future

Ben Carlaw is the perfect role model for any aspiring bull rider – and he's only six years old.

Wearing a white cowboy hat – signed by bull riding legend and former world champion Troy Dunn – Carlaw swaggers up, holds out his hand to firmly shake my hand.

Despite the cheeky, toothy grin, he is polite, smartly dressed and despite his tender age, he certainly rides like a seasoned professional.

Carlaw began riding at three and is one of a host of youngsters who came through the Great Western Hotel's rodeo school after coming along to a fun day at the hotel.

The Year 1 Marmor State School student is one of the contenders in the 2011 Central Rodeo Cowboys' Association series.

“He's a very good young rider,” stock contractor Brian Duggan said.

“He's probably the littlest one there but he's a very good rider – he doesn't know when to let go.”

Carlaw has his eyes on the top prize at tonight's Nissan Navara Arena Top Guns Bulls and Barrels rodeo. “It's pretty good fun,” he said.

Gates open at 6pm.
