HAMLET’S BLACKBERRY

Author: William Powers

Publisher: Scribe

RRP: $29.95

THE author has used an analogy of Hamlet’s tables – yes, Shakespeare’s Hamlet – and his notebooks to demonstrate a method of bringing a rowdy, confusing world of stimuli and information into check. All the connectedness we have through our computers and mobile devices could be interfering with our creativity and personal relationships.

We are physical creatures who understand the world through our bodies, but we now spend so much of our time in front of two-dimensional screens and receive vast amounts of disembodied information. There is a difference between access to information and the experience of it. We need to find ways of reconnecting with ourselves, our friends and our environment. He asks “How can you relax and recharge when the whole world is living with you?”

History is full of examples when some amazing new invention came along that made communication, across distance and time, easier and faster. Those inventions were stimulating and confusing to those who lived through them as today’s inventions are to us. Through his own life experiences Powers shares his quest for balance.
