Boost to agricultural education

AGFORCE has commended moves from the Newman Government to strengthen the quality and delivery of rural education and training in Queensland through the introduction of the Agricultural College Amendment Bill 2013.

The Bill, introduced to Parliament this week by Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh aims to facilitate the creation of a more effective management structure of Queensland Agricultural Colleges and improve financial positioning.

This will include the changing of the Australian Agricultural College Corporation to a statutory body.

AgForce training manager Wendy Allen said the introduction of the Bill also showed a firm commitment from government to ensuring a solid skills base within the rural sector.

"We strongly support the encouragement of young people into agricultural careers, including positions spanning the entire supply chain, through quality training programs that give them the skills to work within the industry," Ms Allen said.

"We are also very supportive of the local college boards in Emerald and Longreach which this Bill will formalise."

Ms Allen said AgForce was committed to playing its role in helping restore the reputation of the ag colleges after some unsteady years of operation.

"It is now time to start rebuilding."
