Bouncing back with medals
PATRICK Cooper and Jarrod Spear have plenty to smile about after their performances earlier this month.
The Victoria Park Gymnastics Club members returned from the National Club Levels Championships at the Kingsborough Sports Centre in Kingston, Tasmania, with a pair of medals, one gold and one bronze.
The National Club Levels event doubled as an opportunity for Spear to impress the Australian selectors in his quest for selection in the Australian team to contest the 2011 World Open Championships, and he didn't do himself any harm.
Spear won the national title for open men's level 9/10 double mini trampoline, and in the process posted automatic qualifying scores for the national team in the eliminations round prior to outscoring his opposition to win the event. “He's been developing new passes all year so sometimes it's hit and miss, but he performed really well at this one,” Victoria Park Gymnastics coach Kerry Smyth said.
Competing in his first open men's national club level championships, Cooper, 18, came from behind to execute an excellent final routine in the finals to secure a well-earned bronze medal in Level 9/10 men's trampoline, ahead of Spear, who finished in fourth place. The pair's impressive results come on the back of standout performances at the Queensland State Age and Open Championships last month.
Spear now turns his focus towards his final Australian Open teams qualifying event, the 2011 National Championships for Trampoline Sports in Adelaide, at the end of September.
