Bowls awesome foursome successfully defends title

LAWN BOWLS: Trent Smalley, John Lenon, Bob Neilsen and Bill Cameron have taken the honours in the Hook Anderson Memorial Fours for the second year running.

The Rockhampton contingent was among 28 teams that took part in the annual two-day carnival played at Diggers Memorial Bowls Club.

The teams, which came from across the state, were vying for a share of the $8000-plus prize purse.

There was some close competition on the greens but the Smalley skipped team swept all before them, winning all five of their games to successfully defend their title.

Trevor Higgins, Mike Browning, Clem McGee and Ray Davidson were second and Darren Steigler, Jim Ross, Scott Howell and Tim Arnold were third.

Eleven-year-old Cooper Bloxsom, who played with his grandmother Kay McCrohon alongside Eileen Arnold and Yvonne Rutherford, enjoyed some success.

The team won its three games on the Saturday to be crowned day one winners.

The team skipped by Bruce van der Wolf was the day two winners, while Nick Jones won the sportsman's prize.
