Marine flares responsible for hospital evacuation

LATEST: Patients and staff at Boonah Hospital were evacuated after a suspicious package was found on the hospital grounds yesterday morning.

A groundsman discovered the package about 100m from the hospital building about 10.30am and police were notified immediately.

The package, which was treated as suspicious, was found to contain marine flares and people were allowed to return to the hospital.

Specially trained officers from Ipswich were called to investigate and no one was hurt during the incident.

 

Bomb squad confirms contents of suspicious package at hospital

UPDATE 1.30PM: West Moreton Hospital and Heatlh Service has confirmed the contents of a suspicious package that caused the evacuation of a hospital this morning.

A groundsman discovered the package about 100m from the hospital building about 10.30am.

A hospital spokeswoman said the bomb squad confirmed the package contained flares.

"The evacuation was deactivated at 11.34am and the area was deemed safe by Queensland Police Service Bomb Squad," the spokeswoman said.

"The package found contained flares. There were no injuries."

 

EARLIER: Boonah Hospital has been evacuated after staff found a 'suspect device'.

Specially bomb trained police officers are on the way to the hospital now to assess the package found about 100 metres away from a building on the grounds. 

Staff and patients have been moved to another building on the property. 

The package, found by a groundsman this morning, was reported to police just after 10.30am. 

While the 'device' is yet to be assessed, police suspect the package contains old marine flares. 

The hospital released a statement confirming the evacuation just after 11.30am. 

"I can confirm staff and patients from Boonah Hospital have been evacuated following a report of a suspicious package on the grounds of the facility," West Moreton Hospital Health Service Chief Executive Sue McKee said. 

"A groundsman found a package approximately 100 metres away from a building on the grounds of the hospital this morning and police were called at 10.40am."
