Police shoot at nitrogen tank

POLICE have shot at a nitrogen tank to depressurise it amid fears it would explode.

The cylinder, which was next to a pharmacy and park in Walkerston, just west of Mackay, has now been removed by firefighters.

The Peak Downs Highway was shut and businesses and one class from a nearby school were evacuated while emergency crews worked to determine if the cylinder would explode.

As police dealt with the cylinder, fire crews were cleaning up a spill after a molasses truck, stopped at the blockade, began leaking over the highway.
