Trawler search area expands from Yeppoon to Gold Coast

UPDATE, 3PM: The search area for a missing fishing trawler has been expanded from Yeppoon to the Gold Coast.

The trawler departed Urangan on November 11 about 9.45pm and travelled east through Breaksea Spit before communications ceased the following morning.

There are three reported crew members, a 60 year-old experienced male skipper, a 24-year-old man and a 38-year-old man.

Officer of Charge of Hervey Bay Water Police and regional search and resuce co-ordinator Sergeant Paul Bacon said authorities held grave concerns for the missing fishermen in what was described as a large operation.

The search was sparked by concerns from family members as the crew failed to make contact in a reasonable timeframe.

The name of the 17m-long trawler and the crew members' identities have not yet been released.

The search will continue.

UPDATE, 1PM: Marine Rescue Hervey Bay and Marine Rescue Bundaberg have been issuing messages on the marine radio to help out with the search for a missing trawler. 

Vice Comodoore Jill Barclay said both volunteer groups had been getting the message out via marine radio to advice boaties on the water to make contact with police if the missing trawler is seen. 

"We started putting messages out on Saturday November 19 after direction from Water Police," Ms Barclay said. 

The 60 foot trawler departed Urangan on November 11 about 9.45pm and travelled east through Breaksea Spit before communications ceased the following morning. 

EARLIER: AN air and sea search is underway for a fishing trawler missing off the coast of Hervey Bay.

The trawler departed Urangan on November 11 about 9.45pm and travelled east through Breaksea Spit before communications ceased the following morning.

There are three reported crew members, a 60 year-old experienced male skipper, a 24-year-old man and a 38-year-old man.

The trawler did not dock at its scheduled Sunshine Coast location on November 18, however this was not deemed out of character by those known to the crew members.

Hervey Bay Water Police commenced a search this morning with the assistance of Lifeflight covering the coastline from Bustard Head to Urangan Harbour.
