Woman dead, woman critical after horror three-car crash

LATEST: POLICE are now investigating the fatal Landsborough crash.

An 86-year-old woman from the Glass House Mountains died in the crash, while a 67-year-old woman, also from the Glass House Mountains was airlifted to hospital in a serous conditions.

Initial investigations suggest that at about 5.20pm a utility travelling south along Steve Irwin Way has collided with the rear of a stationary hatchback.

As a result of the impact the hatchback collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction. The 67-year-old was driving this car and the 86-year-old was a passenger.

The driver of the hatchback, a 66-year-old woman from Landsborough received non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the utility was not injured.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

UPDATE 8.30PM: RACQ LifeFlight has confirmed the woman airlifted to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital was in her late-60s.

She suffered multiple traumas and was in a critical condition when airlifted following this afternoon's horror fatal crash on Steve Irwin Way, Landsborough.

Two other people were taken to Nambour General Hospital in a stable condition following the crash at about 5.20pm.

UPDATE 7.10PM: One person is dead and another has been airlifted to Royal Brisbane Hospital after a horror three-car crash on Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough this afternoon.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said two other patients were taken by ambulance to Nambour General Hospital following the crash which happened at about 5.20pm.

The RACQ LifeFlight rescue helicopter airlifted one patient in a critical condition to Brisbane, while the two taken to Nambour were both in a stable condition.

Initial reports were that one woman had been trapped and one woman freed, but unconscious.

Forensic police officers are now on scene.

EARLIER: Queensland Fire and Emergency Service has confirmed one person has died after a three car crash on the Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough this afternoon.

Scenes of crime and forensic police officers are headed to the scene after the crash which took place near Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue on Steve Irwin Way, Landsborough, at about 5.20pm.

Three firefighting units, multiple ambulance officers and police are all at the scene.

One woman was trapped and one was free earlier and a QFES spokesman said there were no entrapments at present.

Major traffic delays are ongoing and motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

The RACQ LIfeFlight Helicopter is on the scene now.

A THREE-car smash on the Steve Irwin Way this afternoon has left one woman trapped in her car and another woman free, but unconscious with one car rolling and another in a ditch.

Police say one woman is suffering serious injuries, although it is unclear which of the two that is.

Both lanes of Steve Irwin Way traffic have been blocked as a result of the crash which happened just after 5.20pm near Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue.

Police have asked motorists to avoid Steve Irwin Way if possible while emergency services are on scene.
