Brittany Maynard ends her own life

DEATH with dignity advocate Brittany Maynard has died, according to an obituary posted to her website.

The 29-year-old made headlines recently by planning to end her life on November 1, after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in January.

After an initial prognosis suggested that she could survive anywhere between three and 10 years, she was later told by doctors that she had just six months to live.

Following the devastating news, she and her family moved from California to Oregon, which in 1997 became the first US state to allow assisted suicide for terminally ill patients through its Death with Dignity Act. Washington State, Montana, Vermont and New Mexico have since joined Oregon as the only five US states that allow it.

As late as Thursday last week, Brittany posted a video on her website saying she may postpone her plans because she "still had enough joy" in her life.

Her obituary says Brittany "chose to make a well thought out and informed choice" in the face of her illness.

She is survived by her husband Daniel Diaz, her mother Deborah Ziegler and step-father Gary Holmes.

In a final message, she wrote a note of thanks to her supportive friends.

"It is people who pause to appreciate life and give thanks who are happiest. If we change our thoughts, we change our world! Love and peace to you all," she wrote.

In a video posted on YouTube last month, Brittany explains why she has chosen to end her own life.
