Broken toy sparks Kmart bomb scare

A BROKEN toy left in a storeroom sparked a bomb scare yesterday that led to the evacuation of a Kmart store in suburban Melbourne.

Staff and shoppers were kept from the Burwood store for two hours while bomb squad detectives investigated.

Sergeant Darren Kestle from Box Hill police said a staff member had found a suspicious item with LED lights in the Kmart storeroom and police had been called as a precaution.

"They weren't sure what it was and it became a big concern so they evacuated the store as a matter of course,” Sgt Kestle said.

He said the item was part of a dismantled children's toy with "lights, batteries and wires”.

It had been found by a cleaner and put in the storeroom.

"It was broken which is why it wasn't immediately identifiable,” Sgt Kestle said.

"The cleaner had actually stuck it there and tied it onto the cleaner's cage because they thought it looked okay, but it turned out to be nothing.

"The bomb squad came down and cleared it, and it's all good.”
