Brush with polio can't stop Jan from taking the reins

SHE might have to use a walker to get around, but when Kingaroy carriage driver Jan Young takes the reins she feels as in control as ever.

When Mrs Young was younger she was left disabled by the devastating polio disease, something the 68-year-old hasn't let stand in the way of her love for horses.

"As you get older and older it gets harder and harder but I can still fly when I'm in the carriage," she said.

For the past 35 years, alongside her husband Lex, who has one arm and one leg, the able horsewoman has been carriage driving.

The Youngs have won numerous awards at major shows including the Ekka and were once regulars down at the Sydney Royal.

"I was the champion driver at the Brisbane Royal in 2013 and Lex was the champion driver last year," she said.

"We won the champion harness horse or pony and I won the champion whip at Toowoomba this year."

Mrs Young had an exceptional win in a large ladies' whip class, while Mr Young also won the men's whip class at the Warwick Show on Saturday.

"Not many shows have good harness classes," she said.

"The organisers here at Warwick have a put in a lot of effort to raise sponsorship and put on a good show."

Mrs Young has five horses on her Kingaroy property, plus plenty of harness equipment including two viceroys and a buggy.

"I'm always training my horses," she said.

"I like the obedience and the driving training."
