Budget dud for Flynn: O'Dowd

PEANUTS.

That's what was in the State Budget for the Gladstone area, according to Federal Member for Flynn Ken O'Dowd.

He said on Tuesday the allocations earmarked for Gladstone and other centres in the electorate represented “peanuts” in terms of the billions in revenue which would be created by projected industrial expansion in the region.

“The Bligh Government is banking on jobs growth and income from the LNG industry and coal exports to help pull it out of the red over the next few years, but is not putting anything substantial into the necessary housing, health and roads infrastructure to cater for this growth,” Mr O'Dowd said.

He said despite a $11 billion health budget, including $950.7 million dedicated to mental health, it neglected the Flynn electorate.

Mental health care units would reportedly be built at Nambour, Bundaberg, Rockhampton and Toowoomba, while $245 million would go towards hospital expansions at Townsville, Mackay, Mt Isa, Cairns and Rockhampton.

“Gladstone should have been at the top of the list but apparently we are missing out.”
