Building swept away in Bundaberg riverbank collapse

MIDTOWN Marina has been dealt another blow after heavy rain caused part of the riverbank where their storage building was to collapse.

Early this morning, business owner Ray Foley watched on in horror as the two-storey building washed down the river.

Mr Foley said the building had not been used since the floods.

"It had been too dangerous," he said.

The building, which was used as a workshop for their rope work, had two sections, a one storey area and a two storey area with the latter washing away when the bank collapsed.

It was another blow for the business which lost all their marina berths in the recent flooding.

Mr Foley said two thirds of the marina berths had been restored after the 2010/2011 flooding and it was devastating to see all that work washed away for a second time.

But the business owner stressed all was not lost with the seafood and chandlery still in full swing.

"We had the seafood shop open the Monday after the floods," Mr Foley said.

"We've been selling fresh seafood every day."

Meanwhile, Bundaberg mayor Mal Forman has confirmed engineers have just finished assessing the structural integrity of the Burnett Riverside Motel's foundation near the water's edge.

He says the initial assessment has shown there is no need for concern but engineers are now looking at original pier plans as a precaution.
