Bundaberg Rum plans to expand

THE Bundaberg Rum Distilling Company is applying for a big expansion to its premises that could see the venue become an entertainment hub.

The proposed development includes the relocation of Spring Hill House to Hills St, with the building to be used for a museum and ticket sales.

Two Bond Store buildings would be converted into an interactive display area, with kitchen and indoor dining area and nearby a covered outdoor dining area.

In addition to the above, the development also includes new on-site visitor and staff car parking areas, set-down and pick-up areas for buses and larger vehicles and a cul-de-sac at the end of Hills St to allow vehicles to safely turn around.

There is also a road closure application to the west of the proposed cul-de-sac in Hills St.

The news comes just days after a letter writer to the NewsMail suggested the distillery was in desperate need of a facelift.

Bundaberg Rum senior brand manager Duncan Littler said the proposal was put forward to the council last week and was in its early stages but the idea was to build upon the success of the distillery tour.

"What we have at the moment is a good tourism facility," he said.

"What we want to have right here in Bundaberg is a world-class tourist attraction that draws tourists from across Australia and the world to the city of Bundaberg."
