AS THE sky darkened at the weekend, lightning strikes around the Darling Downs kept firefighters busy after causing a number of grass fires.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said firefighters attended 12 fires caused by lightning strikes in the area on Saturday night and early yesterday morning.

She said the fires posed no threat to any properties.

More lightning strikes may be on the way after Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Peter Otto predicted rain for the week.

"We've got an upper level trough coming through Queensland working with a surface trough over the Darling Downs," he said.

"Those two (troughs) will work together to produce some showers and storms."

Mr Otto said storms were predicted for today, tomorrow and Wednesday before easing off and heading towards Brisbane on Thursday.

He said temperatures would not be as hot as they were at the weekend with the cloudy conditions keeping them down.
