Burgers bring tastes of the world

LUKE McGrath is set to take a bite out of the Rockhampton burger market this year with the opening of a Global Burgers chain.

The director of the Australian Franchising Corporation, which owns Global Burgers, Wok Me and Burrito Bar, said he was ready to take the region by storm, adding another burger chain to Rockhampton's already strong fast food climate.

"We're giving country towns something they want and need," he said yesterday.

With plenty of places to grab a burger around Rockhampton, Mr McGrath said the new burger bar would offer customers a healthy option to fast food.

Mr McGrath, who has battled cancer in recent years, said he understood the importance of a healthy diet.

"The obesity problem in regional towns is a byproduct of convenience food," he said.

"We're really trying to push the health side of our menu."

Mr McGrath said the restaurants serve deluxe salads, use hormone-free meat and make their own sauces.

A Global Burgers was recently opened in Mackay and Mr McGrath said the response had been phenomenal so far.

"People are loving the idea," he said.

"We've also got one opening in Gladstone on April 1 and I'm hoping to have one in Rockhampton as soon as I find a site."

Mr McGrath said he would love the Rockhampton Global Burgers store to be on East St.

"The Giddy Goat have done a great job at creating an upmarket place to eat and they're getting the rewards," he said.

"I'd love to put the new restaurant along there."

Mr McGrath said Emerald was also a possibility.

"People in regional areas are treated like second-class citizens by national companies," he said. "With cheap flights now, people in these towns are seeing what's out there so, I thought, let's give it to them."

Mr McGrath said he would be in Rockhampton next week looking at possible sites for the restaurant.

While the existing restaurants were mostly corporate, he said there could be franchising opportunities.
