Business dries up at Rockhampton CBD cafe, Coffee House

ON FRIDAY afternoon, the doors of The Coffee House will close indefinitely.

The popular Rockhampton cafe and hotel, which has been in operation for 16 years, has joined the growing list of local businesses closing down.

The Coffee House manager Des DuRieu said for economic reasons, trading had to cease.

"It's due to circumstances that are economic, we just have to close," Mr DuRieu said.

"You'll find that Rockhampton is very similar to a lot of central areas that rely on mining and that downturn has affected us greatly.

"We tried out hardest to keep on going and do what we could but unfortunately we can't anymore.

"We're hearing of all these places closing down and we're another one. It's not good for the community and it's not good for the people working here."

Mr DuRieu said the tight-knit Coffee House staff family was devastated by the closure and 16 people would lose their jobs.

"We've had this for six years and the best thing has been the friendships that we have collected over that time and the stories that the hotel and cafe has developed over the years; some of them are just unbelievable," he said.

"My main ambition is to get everything finalised here to be able to make sure everyone is comfortable with what is happening and try to get them to the next stage in their lives.

"We've written resumes for staff, sent them to employment agencies and arranged the forms for them to go to Centrelink. We have put plans in action to get them jobs and a couple have jobs to go to."

Mr DuRieu thanked his customers for their support.

"We have a variety of people that come here day in, day out that are just lovely. They don't just come to support what we do but to see the people that work here."
