Business theft victim sorry for defendant jailed over crime

A ROCKHAMPTON mechanic whose business was ransacked in August "feels sorry" for the burglar who was sentenced to prison in Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday.

Richard James Dobson told his defence lawyer "See ya, mate" and gave the thumbs up as he was led from court to a jail cell, charged for break and enter of Rocky 4x4 Mechanics.

The court heard the 24-year-old broke into the Glenmore Rd business between August 5 and 8, smashing through a roller door using three metal poles.

Police prosecutor Danita Clarke said Dobson took a rattle gun, two drills, a laptop and $150 cash.

The court heard Dobson refused to be interviewed by police on August 10 but told police, "Charge me because I did it".

Police found two cone pieces with bongs attached next to Dobson's bed during a search of his home on the same day.

Rocky 4x4 Mechanics owner Graeme Filer said he had since taken steps to protect his business from crime, which was last broken into more than 15 years ago.

Mr Filer said not only had he installed extra security and upgraded, stronger doors, the next step in securing the premises was to adopt a guard dog.

"It pays a lot to have upgraded security, nobody is going to get in now," Mr Filer said.

"But I feel sorry for him; he's thrown his life away.

"He's just another one off the street now."

Dobson was ordered to pay close to $6500 in compensation, $5000 of which was for the damaged door.

"He must have been a little guy because he used rocks to prop the door up," Mr Filer said.

Defence lawyer Brian McGowran said Dobson was affected by drugs.

"I expect it won't come as a surprise to anyone that he was dabbling in methamphetamine over the years," Mr McGowran said.

Dobson also pleaded guilty to possessing drug-related utensils, namely three water pipes.

He was sentenced to 15 months in jail with parole eligibility from January 12, 2016, for the property offences and one month in jail for the drug offence.
