Staff shocked as Toowoomba cafe suddenly closes

A POPULAR CBD cafe has shut up shop without informing its franchise or staff.

Shingle Inn director Andrew Bellchambers has confirmed the franchisee of the Ruthven St site had closed the store without notifying Shingle Inn franchising.

The statement came after an anonymous staff member told The Chronicle workers arrived to the CBD cafe last Friday morning to find it closed.

"We weren't even told," the staff member said.

Mr Bellchambers said it was likely the company would work towards an entirely new concept for the Ruthven St cafe.

"We're disappointed to see the closure of this store as we had great hopes for its revival following the takeover of the store by this franchisee late last year," he said.

"Unfortunately, now we're left to consider our options as we aim to reopen the site and continue to employ locals in a locally-owned business.

"We'll be aiming to have some decisions and renovations under way within the next week and hope that the Toowoomba community will support us as we look towards a new era for the site."

In November last year Gita Verma took over management of the cafe, which had been closed for renovations.

Originally from Brisbane, she had ran other business like a 7-Eleven to build up her management experience.

She had also lent her voice to a group of CBD traders who said the Margaret St Markets was negatively impacting businesses.

Comment was sought from Ms Verma.
