Heavy downpour brings flash floods warning for Queensland

Residents across the Cairns Region are being urged to brace for showers and thunderstorms today that have to potential to cause localised flash flooding.

An active monsoon trough has produced moderate to heavy rainfall in the Far north out the past, with Daintree Village receiving 350mm of rain.

Also receiving significant rainfall has been Topaz with 242mm, Copperlode Dam received 238mm, Malanda had 193mm and Port Douglas and Mossman received 159mm and 155mm respectively.

Forecaster Adam Blazak said there was a good chance of further showers and thunderstorms today, as well as showers over the weekend.

"In some of those storms there will be a very confined area of heavy rain which could lead to localised flash flooding," he said.

"That will continue into early Saturday and before lunch that will start to deteriorate."

Mr Blazak said while there was a moderate chance of a tropical cyclone forming over the weekend, it was likely to be pushed away from the coast.

Fisherman Ben Fogarty started to make his way up to the Torres Strait yesterday (THURS) to dive for cray fish once the season opens on February 1.

He said he was prepared for potential rain along the way.

"We'll just take it steady," he said.

"I've been going up that way for 15 years and I've been through a few cyclones before.

"The rain makes water a little but dirty but we just play it day by day when that happens."
