Call for a safer crossing near uni

AUTHORITIES should consider increasing safety for pedestrians at the crossing on Yaamba Rd near CQUniversity where a woman died on Thursday, a student spokesman said.

CQUniversity Student Association vice-president Shaun Kumar said yesterday he would like to see a speed camera or other safety device, such as an overpass, installed at the busy crossing.

Mr Kumar said many students lived in the area on the other side of the highway, so the crossing was regularly used.

He said a speed camera would help reduce the number of speeding motorists along the 70 kmh stretch. “Speed is a problem,” Shaun said. “Maybe a tunnel or bridge would work.”

He said the university had a strong international community which would come together to support those affected by Thursday's tragedy.

The university community is in mourning following the death of Ambika Subedi, whose husband is a research officer at CQUniversity.

The university has offered support and counselling to those affected by the loss.
