Call-up boosts Olympic dream

THE London Olympics dream of Ipswich hockey player Jordyn Holzberger received a massive boost after she made her Hockeyroos debut on Friday night.

Yamanto-based Holzberger played her first senior match for Australia in her country's 5-0 victory over South Korea in Perth.

Holzberger, 18, has been on the fringe of national selection since making Australia's under-21 team.

She set up a goal on her international debut, after coming into the team to replace regular Casey Eastham, who was suffering a minor injury.

Hockeyroos head coach Adam Commens was pleased Holzberger seized her chance.

"Jordyn has been training very well since the beginning of the year and through excellent performances in intra-club matches, we feel that she deserves an opportunity," Commens said.

"She is a promising player for the Hockeyroos."

The Hockeyroos wrapped up the international series on Saturday night with a 3-1 win at Perth Hockey Stadium.

With Eastham returning in that match, Holzberger represented Australia A in the earlier match.

Holzberger scored the team's second goal.

That kept victory out of reach for the Koreans, capping off an exciting 24 hours for the Ipswich teenager.

Holzberger can press her Olympic case further in matches for Australia A against Korea in Perth tomorrow and Thursday.

Holzberger was unavailable for comment yesterday.
