Arson attack: gas container allegedly put in microwave

A MAN, 25, who is alleged to have put a butane gas container in a microwave at a Caloundra unit is due to face court today on charges including arson and dangerous driving.

The alleged arson occurred at the same Arthur St unit to which police were called after a man was shot in the early hours of November 14.

The shooting was believed to have occurred near the unit, not in it.

Police say the arson and shooting were completely separate incidents and are not linked.

Sunshine Coast District Criminal Investigation Branch officer-in-charge Dave Harbison said the 25-year-old man was involved in an incident with three residents at an Arthur St unit shortly before the alarm was raised about 2.30am yesterday.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Harbison said two men and a wom

an were able to get out of the unit before the microwave was used to explode the gas container.

They were not injured.

The explosion caused damage inside the unit.

"The male person has proceeded to set fire to a number of areas inside the unit," Sgt Harbison alleged.

"The unit was extensively damaged as a result."

He said police were responding to a call to the unit when an officer noticed a black vehicle being driven away from the area.

Police will allege that same car, a black Holden ClubSport, was found crashed at a roundabout on Kawana Way at Birtinya later in the morning.

It was seized and examined by forensic officers.

The 25-year-old man was arrested at the crash scene and was taken into custody.

He was charged with arson, deprivation of liberty, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, drink-driving and driving an unregistered vehicle.

He was kept in custody and is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court today.
