Campbell Newman commits $5m for flood works in Emerald

THE Central Highlands Regional Council has secured $5 million for flood mitigation works at the Nogoa River Rail Bridge under the State Government's Royalties for the Regions program.

Premier Campbell Newman this morning said the Nogoa River Rail Bridge Capacity Improvement and Upstream Levee Development was the first project in the state to receive funding under the program.

"The council put forward a very strong business case for this project," Mr Newman said.

"The floods in Emerald in recent years have underscored the urgent need for mitigation measures."

The CHRC will contribute $1.25m toward the project, which Premier Newman hailed as a win for the local community.

"In 2010, 1060 residences had water over their floors," Mr Newman said.

"The scope of the project works will include the installation of culverts, the excavation of a larger opening under the rail bridge to improve the flow of water underneath, and the construction of levees upstream to protect against flood waters.

"The measures we're announcing today will help protect Emerald against future flooding events such as those experienced in 2008 and 2010, which had a devastating impact on homes and businesses."

Mr Newman said discussions were ongoing with regards to financial commitments from the Commonwealth Government.
