Police raid seizes an estimated $1.5 billion worth of drugs

AUSTRALIAN police have seized about 2.8 tonnes of drugs worth an estimated $1.5 billion in the second-biggest bust in the country's history.

Six men, aged between 23 and 34, were arrested and charged with serious drug importation offences after attempting to smuggle the drugs, which included 1917kg of MDMA and 849kg of methamphetamine, into the country.

Authorities will allege the consignment, which originated in Hamburg, Germany, arrived in Australia on November 19.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin told ABC Online at the weekend the narcotics were concealed with furniture.

He said it was a sophisticated and controlled operation involving AFP, NSW Police and Australian Customs officers.

"By any measure this is an enormous seizure of illicit narcotics that have been removed from distribution on our streets," he said.

The six men appeared in court via video link at the weekend and will face court again later this week.

It is expected authorities will make further arrests in the coming days surrounding the seizure.
