Candidate Hooper's a 'brownie'

CHRIS Hooper says he is "more of a brownie, than a greenie".

The independent candidate for Rockhampton yesterday described himself as a hard-working environmentalist.

Ten years ago Mr Hooper, whose nickname is "Pineapple", traded cars for bicycles, his rickshaw and public transport, in an effort to reduce pollution.

"We've got to have free buses to encourage people to get out of cars," Mr Hooper said.

"You actually save money... it's about fitness too."

Mr Hooper said there should be trains running from Gracemere to Rockhampton, CQUniversity, and along Lakes Creek Rd.

"If [people] were smart they would vote for me," he said.

"I'm a forward thinker."

Mr Hooper said the state of the Fitzroy River was another subject important to him.

"Ten years down the track... we'll be just about buggered, with the river polluted."
