Capras pin hopes on halves, Williams moves to half-back
RUGBY LEAGUE: CENTRAL Queensland Capras assistant coach Kane Hardy has backed his new halves make-up of Matt Minto and Guy Williams as the side looks to break their 12-game losing streak.
Admitting the decision to move Williams, a consistent second-rower, into the halves wasn't ideal; Hardy said the experienced pairing would create opportunities in attack.
"Guy played a bit of five-eighth as a kid, so it's not an unusual position for him," Hardy said.
"His leadership qualities and positive influence when under pressure will help control the game.
"He can give us that running game and support Matty when directing the boys around the field."
The coach concedes the new halves combination will be in place for the foreseeable future.
"It was a little bit of trial and error ... we were lacking a little bit of direction there with young Johno (Mark Johnstone)," Hardy said.
"Johno is a great nine; he's not a five-eighth. The direction he gives us in the way he can read a game, it was cruel leaving him on that edge.
"We thought we would put Guy at five-eighth to give that bit of experience. It's a good mix of him and Matty being in the halves."
The Rockhampton Leagues Club Capras will be without utility Josh Johnston (shoulder) when they take on the Ipswich Jets at North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday afternoon.
Gerard Tema remains in doubt after puncturing his foot two-weeks ago.
