Capras squads keen to tackle players on field in Mackay

LOOK out, Mackay, there are 35 young Central Queensland rugby league players coming for you.

Rockhampton Leagues Club Capras squads are preparing for the trip north to take on rivals Mackay Cutters next week.

And, the 35-man under-18 squad was champing at the bit, according to coach Lionel Harbin.

Schwarz Excavation under-18 CQ Capras coach Harbin said after two solid months of training, his players were eager to "hit someone" in Mackay.

"It's an unbelievable team and it's really enjoyable coaching these boys at the moment," Harbin said.

"I think getting out on the field is the main thing. They just want to get out and play.

"Once they get on that field it's a different story and I think they're just really looking forward to hitting someone actually."

Harbin has been putting his troops through their paces since early December.

With a two-day training camp on the Capricorn Coast this weekend, Harbin said they would be in prime condition for the pre-season encounter with Mackay.

"They're training really well and all of the coaching staff is very happy with how they are going at the moment," he said.

"We had a good block of training before Christmas and started back just after New Year's."

Harbin said his team would battle teams from Cairns to the Sunshine Coast in the Mal Meninga Cup country division, in hope of securing the top position in the north and an opportunity to take on south Queensland's best teams.

"(From there) if we finish in the top two we then go on to the Queensland final and if we are successful in that we go on to the national finals," he said.

"Our goal is to develop these players to go on to play for Capras A-grade and hopefully in the CQ NRL Bid and to be the best players to come from this region."

Capras operations manager Walson Carlos said the under-16 JMK Capras team also was shaping up quite well and tipped Daley Doyle as a player to keep an eye on throughout the Cyril Connell Cup season.

The under-18 and under-16 teams were to join the under-21 and Intrust Super Cup team in a weekend of preseason games against Mackay Cutters in Mackay next Saturday.
