Capricorn Claws campaign begins tomorrow
LAST season the Claws attracted 18 players to their trials.
This year they have had 34 aspiring netballers sign up for the trials, which begin tomorrow at Emmaus College.
It marks the beginning of the new season and Claws coach Katrina Whitham knows she has to work fast.
"This is one and only trial," Whitham said.
"I am delighted with the numbers and I am going to need those kind of numbers because I am only allowed 12 on the team. That means I will select a squad of 15 frontline players.
"Next season's State Netball League begins earlier, our first game is on January 30 so we will have to get going quickly."
Whitham will also choose a train on, or shadow, squad, mainly consisting of talented younger players.
That is in preparation for the new under 17 State Netball League competition which begins in 2017.
"There have been a number of changes," Witham said.
"The earlier start to the season and the introduction of the new under 17 competition in 2017."
"I am not sure how many younger players will make the shadow squad because I want to see what talent is out there first.
"I should have a reasonable idea after Sunday.
"The idea is for the young shadow squad to train with the Claws
"We need to get them ready quickly."
